Late 1800's George P. Matthews 7 string Fretless Banjo with Riley resonator
6 long strings, one short; 11 1/4" skin head; 26 3/4" scale; 1 3/4" nut; 35 1/2" body length; small chip in wood fingerboard where neck meets body; Friction pegs; Riley engraved resonator; strung with Nylgut strings.
George P. Matthews (1858-1929) was an English banjo maker in Birmingham England. Not only did he sell a wide range of instruments bearing his own name but he made banjos and zither-banjos for other wholesale and retail firms (such as Ball Beavon, Rose Brothers, J. Thibouville, Lamy & Co., Rose Morris & Co.) to brand as their own. This banjo comes with a highly engraved resonator by Joseph Riley & Son, another famed British Banjo maker of the late 1800's.
