1954 RB-100 with 5-ply full thickness "brown" rim.
Serial number 4-884-27
All original except for arm rest, 5th string geared tuner and a few hooks and nuts. Currently has a tailpiece installed from early 60's Bowtie (better tone) but the original '54 tailpiece is included in case (original Lifton-type pink-lined case).
The resonator is as pretty as they come with a deep rich dark-framed sunburst complete with some "bird's eye" figure.
In terms of the banjo as a whole, it's hard to believe there are a lot of '54 RB-100's out there in better shape.

Now about the patented dual hoop hyperbolic tone chamber system otherwise known as DHHTCS
This banjo originally had a single small "arch-top" size brass on top of the rim. I put a second 11" hoop on the banjo creating a space between the 2 hoops and then tightened the head so there is pressure on both hoops. The head lies flat and parallel over the 2 hoops creating a sound chamber between the 2 hoops and voila! Now you have a banjo that gives you a good amount of the richness and depth that can only come from a tone ring banjo.
Don't get me wrong, I love hoop banjos but there's a reason Earl abandoned his KK-11 as soon a he could, and JD traded his early on. And that no pro I know of use a hoop banjo when playing professionally.
Single hoops have the volume and they have the sustain. The thing they don't have that tone ring banjos do is that depth and richness.
Now with the DHHTCS, you can get a good dose of what you've been missing.
