For Sale: Gibson 1950s RB250 Mastertone (sold) |
|
Up for grabs is a super cool, 1950s "hot rod" RB250 that was assembled by Russ Carson that I've had the pleasure of being caretaker of for about a year. This banjo was previously for sale with Jim Britton of Ceres Banjo Works, and any information here is pulled from that listing and my knowledge of the work Russ did to build this really cool piece.
Gibson revamped their banjo lineup in the 1950s, and Russ built this banjo around an original 5 string pot assembly that featured an archtop ring, as most of the 5 string 250s did. He then sourced a period correct 19-hole flathead ring for the banjo, and a period correct RB250 neck (the original for the pot was lost or too far gone to use). Add in a prewar presto tailpiece (unpunched) and a period correct hot-pink lined Lifton case and... boom! A 1950s hot rod Gibson.
Banjo is being sold as is. All parts are as listed.
- Original pot assembly for a 1950s RB250. Mahogany resonator with period correct finsih in good condition, with all metal parts original and in working order with exception of the added 19 hole flathead ring and a prewar Presto tailpiece. Again, 19 hole ring is period correct. This pot assembly started out as an archtop that Russ had cut to accept the period correct flathead ring.
- Period correct RB250 neck with proper finish for period.
- Pink lined Lifton case.
See pictures as they speak for themselves. Sound clips can be provided for serious inquiries, although you may be able to find clips of Jim Britton playing this on his page and... let's face it the man is a beast! $4,500 takes the banjo. Shipping and pick up to be discussed. No trades.
Thanks for looking and happy picking!
