For Sale: 1928 Gibson RB-3 Original 5-String "The Carson Cooper" |
|
This original 5-string Gibson RB-3 was purchased by the late Carson Cooper in the 1960's. Carson was widely known for his banjo playing, being part of the band "Appalachian Trail", and having Coopers Morrell Music in Marion VA. Carson's music store supplied countless musicians local and professional with Gibson banjos, Martin guitars, sound equipment and on and on for decades. The banjo has remained in the family since his passing until now being made available. According to Joe Spann, F.O.N. 9032-8 would have been from March of 1928. This Gibson is in the 2-piece flange configuration with a few modifications. Wayne Henderson filled the cam tuner holes and replaced the fretboard in the 1970's. Wayne also recalls possibly fitting the "modern" 20-hole flathead tone ring to the banjo about the same time. The ring weighs 3 pounds 1 and 1/2 ounces and professionally machined. The Paramount tuners were on the banjo when Carson purchased it. The banjo shows plenty of patina and is configured just as Carson had it with the Snuffy Smith head and bridge.
