1929 Gibson RB-3 Mastertone 40-hole archtop banjo, with 5-string conversion neck. Neck built by Gibson. Original 4-string tenor neck and case included. Pot is ALL original from Gibson factory in 1929. Nickel plating all original and BRILLIANT! Resonator has a clear coat of lacquer sprayed due to bleeding of finish onto my clothing. 5-string neck built by Gibson for export in 1977 or 78 and has the Gibson number stamped into the back of peghead. Neck has rosewood fingerboard inlayed with diamonds and squares pattern (matches original tenor neck pattern). Ebony overlay on peghead with diamonds and squares. The Gibson script on peghead came out of a Gibson guitar peghead 40 years ago. Two-band waverly off-set tuners with ivoroid buttons. All neck work done by luthier Don Rust - a true artist having done perfect inlay work on this banjo. Don is one of the best at matching finishes and his work here is no exception. Neck has slight sunburst and matches original finish on resonator perfectly. Resonator has serial number printed inside on the side piece near neck and has original chalk number hand written on inside of back of resonator. The matching serial number is also stamped inside the woodrim, along with the original, intact Mastertone sticker. I played this for years with a drop-in Hopkins flathead conversion ring, but I don't know why because it sounds great with the original 40-hole raised head ring. It has a lot more mid and lower tones than other raised heads I've played. This banjo was played for many years and featured on albums and live performances with the Missouri based, Possum Trot Band. The banjo has exceptional sound, originality, and overall condition.
