Fairbanks-Vega Whyte Laydie # 2, 1908, Serial number 24801. The date of this instrument places it about five years after the Vega company purchased AC Fairbanks. This instrument has the Fairbanks label, which apparently Vega used for several years after the buy-out. This is a beautiful example of a clawhammerer’s dream banjo: crisp, ringing, and resonant because of the Whytle Laydie tone ring. Maple neck is nice and straight, maple pot with double- tortoise binding. Veneer on headstock has one section missing (see photos) and a stabile crack (to the veneer, not the headstiock); the instrument has remarkably few dings that you might expext on an old girl of this age (112!); non-original fifth peg; some non-original hooks, some cloudiness/pitting of metal parts; waverly fiberskyn head installed in the 80’s. Original hard shell case in fair-poor condition.
