For Sale: **Sold** Mid-30s Gibson PB-11 w/Sound Clip (sold)
This is a very strong, rare and unique banjo! It is a mid-30s Gibson PB-11 (originally a Plectrum banjo), with a beautiful honey and blue resonator and matching 5-string neck in correct pearloid by Rob Smith, of Heartland Banjos, in Gallatin, TN. I acquired this banjo from Greg Earnest and sent it to Rob for the 5-string neck. Included is the invoice for Rob's exceptional work.
As a Plectrum banjo, this banjo has some very unique and beautiful features, which set it apart from most standard Style 11s of the day, which were generally Tenor banjos with straight-grain maple necks. Unlike other Style 11 banjos, the original plectrum neck on this banjo is walnut, similar to those used on PB-4 flatheads, as is the resonator sidewall. Since a prior owner stripped the sidewall, Rob Smith refinished the sidewall. The rest of the blue paint (on the rim, inside of resonator and on the original plectrum neck) is original.
Rob Smith built a beautiful and matching 5-string Mahogany neck, with correct pearloid fretboard and prewar dimensions. Rob painstakingly matched the 5-String neck to the original plectrum neck and resonator. The 5-string neck also has Stainless Steel frets (which is a $150 upgrade) and Gotoh tuners.
The original one-piece flange is in excellent condition, with minimal “pull.” This banjo has the original brass (larger flathead-style) tone hoop. The hooks and nuts are prewar replacements, and the tension hoop is a prucha pot-metal replacement.
Set-up was completed by Rob with one of his bridges. Includes the original walnut plectrum neck, with the original tuners. Comes with black TKL case. Strap not included.
When is the last time you saw a walnut PB-11 with a honey-colored resonator as strikingly beautiful as this one? It is truly stunning in person! Light weight and sounds great!!
